November 13th to 20th is Transgender Awareness Week, which ends with Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20th. This is a week for trans folks and allies to take action, share stories and experiences, and advance advocacy efforts.
This year more than ever, raising awareness of the marginalization faced by trans people is extremely important. As the CBC reported earlier this month, transphobic rhetoric is becoming more normalized and prevalent, in this extremely thorough piece: Anti-trans views are worryingly prevalent and disproportionately harmful, community and experts warn. At The AIDS Network, we are proud of our advocacy efforts such as our staff support for the Hamilton Trans Health Coalition and our clear, public positionality on the importance of access to gender-affirming healthcare, but much remains to be done in the fight for safety, dignity and equity for our trans friends and neighbours. Join us this week in renewing our commitment to raising awareness and working towards a world without transphobia.
