POSITION SUMMARY:

The purpose of the Harm Reduction Program is to reduce the transmission of HIV and other blood borne infections as well as reduce the risk of overdose among people who use drugs. The Harm Reduction Peer Navigator position is a position that reaches out to people who use drugs to increase knowledge and awareness of harm reduction practices and to increase access to community services.

This position is responsible for providing harm reduction services in Halton Region. In conjunction with The Regional Harm Reduction Worker, this position reports directly to the Manager, Harm Reduction Programs and Services at The AIDS Network. This is a part-time direct frontline position that provides support, participates in community development, assists with training for local service providers, promotes harm reduction, and enhances peer engagement in the program.

Primary Responsibilities

·         Work collaboratively with advocacy groups and organizations that work with people who use drugs to raise awareness and build community capacity.

·         Coordinate and implement direct outreach activities.

·         Make appropriate referrals.

·         Maintain confidential and accurate files.

·         Comply with agency policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Skills

·         The comfort and skills to apply your lived experience in a helpful way to others.

·         Direct experience working with marginalized and vulnerable members of our community.

·         Have a strong knowledge of community resources.

·         A deep understanding of stigma associated with substance use and related issues.

·         Demonstrated use of harm reduction philosophy and principles.

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills.

·         Demonstrated problem solving and advocacy skills.
